The new Bluetooth 4.2 specification aims
to assist small Bluetooth powered devices
in easily connecting to the world wide
web. This standard could usher in a new
wave of cost effective, web ready Internet
of Things devices.
Currently, Bluetooth devices are often
dependent on another host device for their
internet access, be that your smartphone,
computer or some other hub. This isn’t
ideal if you want the device to grab data
from the internet for itself. Bluetooth 4.2
allows for a direct connection to internet
routers and hot-spots using low-power
IPv6/6LoWPAN protocols. This could prove
hugely beneficial for small, low-power IoT
devices and home automation, as well as
the next generation of wearables.
Bluetooth 4.2 also aims to tackle issues of
privacy and improved data speeds. Other
devices should find it harder to track 4.2
versions without the correct permissions.
Data speeds are also looking at a potential
boost of 250 percent and a 10 fold packet
capacity increase. General power efficiency
is also set for an improvement.
The standard is already complete and
waiting for manufacturers and developers
to make use of it. Direct internet access
capability expected to be ready before the
year’s end. Bluetooth 4.2 devices will
likely begin to appear sometime in early
mid 2015.
